Resolution Together

One couple, one lawyer

Resolution Together is a way of separating couples working jointly with one lawyer on their separation or divorce. This is in line with the no fault divorce process, so that joint applications can be made to end a marriage and reduce unnecessary conflict. It is suitable for couples whose joint aim is to reach an outcome together which meets their needs and the needs of any of their children.

How is works?

  • Joint meetings are then set up to share information on financial or children matters.
  • Legal advice is given and options are set out.
  • The issues are explored and the couple work towards an agreement.
  • Other professionals can be brought into the process, if appropriate. For example tax or pensions advice may be required from an actuary or financial advisor.

Once agreement is reach the lawyer drafts the documents to submit to the court for approval.

What it can’t offer?

  • Individual advice cannot be given outside of any joint meeting.
  • All information has to be shared and cannot be kept confidential from the other person.
  • The lawyer is not there to make decisions or negotiate for the couple.

Is this process right for you?

The process is likely to work well if you and your former partner are looking to work amicably and fairly in a cooperative and open way. It is unlikely to be appropriate if there are unresolved allegations of domestic abuse, power imbalances or safeguarding concerns. We may suggest another form of dispute resolution. There is helpful information on the Resolution website www.resolution.org.uk and there are 2 flowcharts for children and finances.
